Debt collection extract in Switzerland: a guide for newcomers
What the Betreibungsauszug is, why landlords want it, and how to get one.
What is it?
The debt collection register extract (German: Betreibungsregisterauszug or Betreibungsauszug; French: extrait du registre des poursuites) lists debt collection proceedings against you at your local debt enforcement office over the last 5 years.
Why do landlords want it?
It shows that you have no open debts. Almost every Swiss rental application asks for one that is no older than 3 months.
I moved recently. Is one extract enough?
Each extract only covers one office. If you moved within Switzerland, ask for extracts from all places of the last years. eAuszug orders them in one go: first extract CHF 24.90, each additional CHF 21.90.
I just arrived in Switzerland
Register with your municipality first. Your extract will then usually be empty, which is normal. Mention your arrival date and add your employment contract to your application.
What do I need?
- Passport, ID card or Swiss residence permit (no driving licence)
- Your current and previous Swiss addresses
- An email address for delivery
As of 19.10.2026. General information, not legal advice.
